Pro Nuclear Democratic Roundup 1
As this blog is titled "Pro Nuclear Democrats", it is appropriate to be naming the Democrats who have voiced or voted in favor of nuclear energy.
Though some of these Democrats have not always voted in the favor of nuclear energy but they are on record as giving these remarks. Pro Nuclear Democrats is currently working on a nuclear voting scorecard and will publish this when ready.
As the list grows, this post will be updated.
U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-IN)
"I cannot envision an energy future without nuclear playing a significant role."
U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-MI)
"I have long been a strong supporter of securing funding for the Department of Energy’s Yucca Mountain repository project. That is an important part of keeping faith with utility ratepayers, who have contributed over $20 billion to the fund."
Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA)"
Yucca Mountain has gained both national and international scientific peer approval with over 20 years and $7 billion dollars worth of scientific, environmental and engineering field work. After personally visiting this very isolated and one of a kind site, I believe it provides a solid nuclear waste disposition option."
Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY)
"I think nuclear power has to be part of our energy solution."
U.S. Rep. James Oberstar (D-MN)
"I will support the expansion of nuclear energy that utilizes most advanced technology to reduce waste and spent material."
U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC)
"I am an ardent supporter of expanding our country's nuclear capacity."
Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)
"Nuclear power is a mature technology today."
Senate Candidate Al Franken (D-MN)
"To me, if we’re going to be serious about ... climate change, [nuclear energy] is an opportunity we have to take”
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
"There's no question that nuclear is going to be part of the solution."
Gov. Jim Doyle (D-WI)
“I think what you're going to see happening with nuclear is one or two new plants will be commissioned in some state in the country ... and when that happens, most of the country will really take a new look at this.”
Senator Tom Carper (D-DE)
“Nuclear power is poised to play a key role in meeting our energy challenges and realizing our potential as the 21st century unfolds."
Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-MD)
“It is a huge moral challenge and it is a moral imperative given what massive new burning of coal will do to the planet if we don't develop better and cleaner technology, including safer and cleaner nuclear, which is what is … planned and talked about in terms of the third reactor [at Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant].”
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH)
“Jobs. This is about jobs. This is a heck of an opportunity to invest back into the United States and create jobs. … When we see an opportunity like this—clean energy, economic development, good-paying jobs—we need to move forward with it.”
Gov. Tim Kaine (D-VA)
“Virginia has unique attributes within the nuclear industry that provide an opportunity for it to be the leader in nuclear energy.”

Its ironic to see Hillary Clinton on that list since she was rather hostile to the idea of nuclear power during her campaign against Obama. If fact why of her surrogates accused Obama of being for nuclear energy during the campaign-- as if it were a bad thing?
Yes, it is ironic. She did give that statement however. I've seen her criticize the Yucca Mt. project as well. There are definitely mixed messages coming from some democrats about nuclear energy. As such, I'm trying to do what I can to unite Democrats to get behind nuclear power.
I'm still a critic of Yucca Mountain because:
1. I don't think spent fuel should be thrown away (there's good fuel in there)
2. I don't think Nevada should be the central repository for all US nuclear waste
State repositories for the radioactive waste created within a state seems to be the best solution, IMO, as I have argued on my blogsite at: http://newpapyrusmagazine.blogspot.com/2008/08/short-long-term-solutions-to-nuclear.html
Senator Jim Webb of Virginia is a also a strong backer of nuclear power.
